Regular Monthly Meeting;September 15th, 2016 at 7 pm !!! Stories of Camp Butler & Camp Douglas during Civil War; Many have driven by Camp Butler cemetery, 5 miles E of Springfield, and wondered about its history. This month, Joe will compare the history of the two primary training/POW camps of the Union during the Civil War. Camp Butler is better known, Camp Douglas is almost unknown. A comparison of these two camps is quite interesting. Camp Douglas site is near downtown Chicago; partially built on property of Lincoln's senatorial challenger, Senator Stephen A. Douglas. It was much larger than Camp Butler. Joe worked in Chicago area for 30 years and never heard of Camp Douglas. Now he'll share what he has learned since that time.
